Posted on the 05 March 2024 by Kiril Natov

Vomit is probably one of the worst things that may ever need to be cleaned from your carpets. You have to remove not just the stain but also the odour. Vomit has a strong odour that can be tricky to get rid of as well.

The most important thing is to clean the vomit up as quickly as possible. Тhe longer that it is left on the carpet, the further it will seep into the fibres. If it’s left too long it will reach the underlay and that will cause the odour to stick around as you won’t be able to clean underneath unless you pull all the carpet up.

Clean Vomit From Your Carpet With Corn Starch

There are many ways that vomit can be removed from your carpets effectively without needing to contact a professional carpet cleaning company.

One of these methods uses Corn Starch, for this method you will need:

  • Scraper (Knife/Spoon)
  • Dustpan
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Old Clean Clothes
  • A Dry Cleaning Solvent (Prochem B123-01/ Dryel)
  • White Vinegar
  • Corn Starch
  • Washing Up Liquid
  • Cold Water

To begin you will need to scrape as much of the vomit up as possible using your dustpan and Knife / Spoon. Be sure to wear rubber gloves to ensure you don’t get vomit all over your hands. Once you are happy and have scraped up as much vomit as possible, sprinkle some cornstarch onto the stained area. Make sure to completely cover the affected area and leave it to sit for 10 to 15 Minutes. This will absorb the vomit from the carpet fibres.

Using one of your clean cloths apply the dry cleaning solvent of your choosing. We would recommend Prochem B123-01 or Dryel as these have proven to be the most effective for carpet stains removal. Apply the dry solvent by blotting the stained area and continue to do this until all of the dry solvent has been absorbed into the carpet’s fibres.

Once this step has been completed you should not be able to see the vomit satin anymore. If there are still remnants of the stain left, try mixing one tablespoon of White Vinegar, one tablespoon of Washing up liquid and 2 Cups of warm water and begin to sponge the stained area until you are happy with the result, there should be no remnant of the vomit left.

Lastly rinse the carpet with cold water to remove the solution. Leave the carpet to completely dry and then vacuum to fluff up the fibres, your carpet should look and feel clean and soft. The vinegar will also help aid in the odour removal.

Another Method of removing Vomit would be to use a product called Nature’s Miracle

It’s actually a pet stain removal product but has been proven very effective against vomit stains too, as well as Hydrogen Peroxide and some other household products such as oolite or fibres. There are many options for you to choose from and some that will not need you to go and buy products as you may already have them under your sink.

There are so many ways to remove Vomit from your carpets so there’s no need to panic if an accident should occur. Just be sure to clean it up as soon as possible to minimise the risk of permanent damage. These methods are also so quick to complete allowing  you to get it done and continue with the rest of your day as usual.

If you don’t feel comfortable to try these methods or are unsure whether your carpets can be cleaned in such ways it might be a good idea to contact a professional carpet cleaner to assess the  type of carpet that you have. They will be able to guide you in the correct method of cleaning your carpets.
