How to Choose a Blog Niche

Choosing a niche is a dilemma that every blogger faces while starting a blog.

I don’t see a point in writing a 2000 word article just to explain you to follow your passion.

Passion can get you started, but it takes consistent effort over a long period of time to get desired results in blogging.

Unfortunately, your passion is worth nothing if it’s not catering to the needs of people.

You can be really passionate about collecting cups, but if there aren’t enough people interested in your passion or just not willing to invest time in reading articles about that, then it’s not gonna work.

This is a quick guide to validate your blog niche idea and look at it objectively.

Ask yourself these 5 questions before starting a blog, so that you can set yourself up for success.

Are you Writing about something you’re good at or interested in?

This is the first question you should ask yourself before starting a blog.

Writing about something you enjoy will help you remain consistent with your writing.

If you start a blog in a niche you are not interested in, you are very likely to lose the motivation after a period of time.

Blogging is something that requires commitment and a lot of investment of time.

If you are genuinely interested in the topic you write about, you can easily work on it for hours and overcome any hurdles you face without giving up.

Moreover, it does not feel like you are doing some work when you’re working on something you enjoy.

This will eventually help you to produce high-quality content that’s loved by your readers and this is a key ingredient in making your blog a success.

Does your content cater to any specific need of your audience?

Most people start blogging because of selfish reasons.

But they realize soon enough, that approach does not work.

Instead of approaching blogging with a perspective of what I’m gonna get, approach it with a perspective of what I’m gonna give.

This small shift in mindset can separate you from 90% of other bloggers out there.

Follow your passion is BS advise.

Your passion needs to solve a need of your audience.

This approach helps you to create content that caters to the Needs, Pain Points, Emotions, Problems and Service Deficiencies.

And ultimately that’s the content that works.

It also prevents your blog from looking like a marketing channel of multiple companies looking to sell stuff to your readers.

This helps you to establish trust with your audience.

How big is the audience interested in that content?

This helps you to understand how many people are interested in the type of content that you are going to create in the future.

Knowing this beforehand can prevent you from creating content that no one’s interested to read.

This needs a bit of keyword research.

Keyword research

Keywords are the words or queries used by people to search for information on search engines like Google.

Keyword research can, not only validate your blog idea but also help you to bring in the right kind of visitors to your website.

The best part is you don’t have to spend a lot of money on buying premium tools for keyword research as you can easily use some of the free tools that I’m going to recommend.

The first place to validate your idea is Google Trends and Google Keywords Planner.

Google Trends helps you to understand the popularity of a search term in a given duration.

For example, if you are starting a health and fitness blog and need more clarity on which topic is trending, you can easily go to Google trends to find the answer.

How to Choose a Blog Niche using Google Trends

As you can see in the image, Yoga is much more popular than Tai Chi in the United States.

But don’t use this as the only point of reference, because even though Tai Chi is not as popular as Yoga, there’s definitely an audience interested to read more about Tai Chi.

For knowing how many people are searching for Tai Chi, you can use Google Keywords Planner.

You need to sign up for a free Google Ads account to use Keyword Planner.

Just Go to Google Ads > Tools > Keyword Planner

As you can see from this data, there are a lot of people interested in Tai Chi as well.

So this is how Keyword Research tools can be used to validate your idea and help you to create content that will directly appeal to your readers and audience.

Some of the other keyword tools that you can use are KWfinder, Ubersuggest, and Long Tail Pro.

What is the level of competition in your blogging niche?

It would be much easier for a new blog to drive visitors in a relatively shorter period of time if there’s isn’t much competition in that niche.

But sometimes, competition is also a good sign as it indicates that this niche is evergreen and there are plenty of opportunities to make money in these niches.

Tech, Fashion, Health and Fitness and Finance are some of the evergreen niches.

This is a factor that should be taken into consideration, but it should not act as a deterrent or motivator to start a blog in that niche.

Knowing and researching about your competition will help you to understand what kind of content you need to create and it also gives you an opportunity to find gaps in the content, that will eventually help you to create much better content.

How can you make money in your niche?

This is the final question you need to ask yourself.

Money may or may not be a “biggest” factor while starting a blog, but it’s definitely a key factor.

If you are putting your time and effort into something, it’s a reasonable expectation to generate an income.

If you are completely clueless about making money from blogs, you can read this guide.

This is where your competition research plays an important role.

Take some time to find out what methods are your competitors are using to make money from their blogs.

Amazon Affiliate Program is used by most of the bloggers so you can find products that you can pitch to your visitors in your niche.

Different blogging niches use different methods of monetization, so you need to do a bit of research yourself to make sure that your blog turns profitable.
