Are you wondering how to build a research institute in Frostpunk 2? In this survival strategy game, creating a research institute is an important step toward upgrading your technology and keeping your society alive.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step of building the research institute, from gathering materials to managing resources efficiently. Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Expand a Housing District

Before placing a Research Institute, you’ll need an expanded Housing District. Unlike other districts where buildings can be placed immediately, Housing Districts need expansion before they’re ready for certain types of buildings, like the Research Institute. Here’s how to expand a Housing District in Frostpunk 2:

  1. Select the Housing District: Click on a Housing District to open its information pane.
  2. Choose the Expansion Option: Click on the arrows icon at the bottom of this pane.
  3. Add Tiles: Select three tiles next to the Housing District. If the space isn’t available, you may need to clear (Frostbreak) the area around it.
  4. Confirm the Expansion: Click on the checkmark that appears after selecting the tiles.

Expansion Costs and Benefits

Expanding a Housing District costs 50 Heatstamps and 50 Prefabs. Once expanded, it provides five additional shelters for residents and opens up an extra building slot. This district can be expanded again to increase its capacity and unlock another building slot if needed.

Step 2: Build the Research Institute

With an expanded Housing District ready, you can now build your Research Institute. Follow these steps:

  1. Access Building Options: Click on the Building circle in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  2. Navigate to the Housing Tab: Select the Housing tab, and find the Research Institute option.
  3. Place the Institute: Click on the pulsating circle within the expanded Housing District to place the Research Institute.

Building Costs and Requirements

Constructing a Research Institute requires 400 Workforce, 100 Heatstamps, and 50 Prefabs. After construction, it demands an ongoing 400 Workforce to operate and requires a Heat supply of 20 units.

Once it’s built, the Research Institute will appear at the top of the Housing District’s information pane. Additionally, you’ll see a new icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen, giving you access to the Idea Tree.

Step 3: Use the Idea Tree to Advance

With the Research Institute operational, you can now access the Idea Tree. This feature allows you to research new buildings, laws, and passive bonuses. If you’re working to complete the first chapter, consider starting with an idea for new Coal Mines to keep up with resource demands and ensure your city’s survival.

Building and maintaining the Research Institute is a strategic move that opens the door to powerful upgrades and innovations.

Final thoughts

Learning how to build a research institute in Frostpunk 2 is important for ensuring your city’s survival. By mastering this process, you unlock powerful upgrades that help you manage resources, improve efficiency, and protect your citizens from the harsh environment. So, experiment with different strategies, focus on what benefits your people most, and let the research institute guide your city toward a stronger tomorrow.
