How To Build A Human From Scratch
Here’s your assignment: build a human body from scratch.
Ready? Go!
Oh, I forgot to mention that you can’t use Artificial Intelligence, a computer, your cell phone, or any other device, object, or instrument. Unfair you say? Okay, I’ll give you two things – dust from the ground and your breath.
While that may sound like a ridiculous request, a Person did it a long time ago. His name is Jesus Christ. Jesus lived in Israel two-thousand years ago. He was born, He grew up in a Hebrew household, He obeyed His parents and worked side by side with His earthly father, He had a brief ministry, He was murdered by the Roman government, He was buried, He rose from the dead, He showed Himself alive to hundreds of people, then ascended back to Heaven. I say “back to Heaven” because that’s where Jesus started His mission to build a human body, then save humans from a most unpleasant situation.
So, how did Jesus build a human body? Did He have a laboratory in Heaven? Is that where Jesus did His work? The short answer is “no,” but maybe we should answer another question first. How did Jesus start out in Heaven in the first place?
Heaven
People who knew Jesus best said “He is the image of the invisible God.” They said that “All things were created through Him and for Him.” They said that “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” They said that God created all things through Jesus Christ.” They said Jesus “created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.” They said that in Jesus “all things consist.”
They said that Jesus “is the Lord from heaven.” They said that He is “in the form of God” and “equal with God.” Jesus is not, as many people believe, someone God created and promoted to an important position in the spiritual world. Jesus is Eternal. He’s always existed. Jesus is God.
So, when we read in Genesis 1 that God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness,” we’re hearing the voice of the Son of God, as well as God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit. When we read in Genesis 2 that “the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being,” those words are describing what Jesus Christ did thousands of years ago. Remember? “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” That covers “everything” pretty well.
Where was Jesus when He “formed man?” Was He in Heaven, which in itself is a miraculous place? No, He was on earth when He “built” the first humans.
Earth
Jesus used “the dust of the ground” to “form” the first human. After “forming” the first human, Jesus breathed “the breath of life” into the nostrils of the first human and the man “became a living being.” Jesus did all of that on the planet Earth. Jesus could have done that in Heaven, but He created the “heavens and the earth” first. The “earth” Jesus created was the perfect biosphere for life. You can read Genesis 1 and 2 in detail to see how remarkable this biosphere was for human life to exist.
However, let’s get back to the assignment. build a human body from scratch. Oh, and I should add that the assignment is really to build two human bodies. The first human body will be male, and the second human body will be female. That second human? the female? You won’t use the dust of the ground to build her. You’ll use something from the first human to build the second human.
Whoa! This is becoming too complicated. Let’s see if we can do the first part of the assignment before we tackle the second part.
I was inspired to write this brief GraceLife article because of someone else’s article. It’s called “Thirty Steps to Build a Human Body.” The article was written by a professor of Biomedical Engineering at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California Irvine. He is specifically — Professor, Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND).
I was impressed by his academic credentials, but the article is what caught my attention. I’ve often quoted King David who wrote – “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” The more we learn about the human body from scientific investigation, the more I agree with the words of someone who lived three-thousand years ago. Yes, we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Dr. Brewer’s article explains in detail what it would take to build a human body. After you read the article, I think you’ll agree with what David and other biblical writers have said about Creation. Jesus Christ accomplished something that only He could have done. Only God could create the heavens and the earth. God asked Job an excellent question about that in Job 38 – “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.” We could ask a similar question – where were we when Jesus, the Eternal Son of God, took the dust of the earth and formed the first human? Where were we when Jesus Christ breathed the breath of life in the nostrils of the first human and man became a living being”?
Remarkable and Unrepeatable
Jesus Christ taking the “dust of the ground” and “forming” the first human being is two things. First, it’s remarkable. Second, it’s unrepeatable. Many atheists (I used to be one) ask me and other Christians to use science to prove that God created the heavens and the earth and everything in it. That’s not possible because the “Creation event” and forming the first human from “the dust of the ground” cannot be proven or disproven using any method of science (scientific method). There’s no experiment or analysis that scientists could follow the steps described in Genesis 1 and 2 to obtain the same results.
Ideally, an experiment or analysis should be described in sufficient detail that other scientists with sufficient skills and means can follow the steps described in published work and obtain the same results within the margins of experimental error. It can’t be done. God created the heavens and the earth. It’s a one-time event that can’t be repeated. That’s what I believe based on God’s Word. If you don’t believe God’s Word, then take the challenge. You might want to follow Dr. Brewer’s Thirty Steps to Build a Human Body. use his steps in a different order, or come up with your own steps. You may want to believe in Darwinian “magic” that given enough time and randomness, the complexity of humanity “became.” Whatever. Your choice.
I prefer to believe, rejoice, and praise the amazing Creative work of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might, Be to our God forever and ever. Revelation 7:12
