How to Balance Being a Mother and Life

Posted on the 19 July 2020 by Melissa Jiggetts @jiggettsmelissa

When you have a child, they become the most important thing in your life. As parents, we’d do anything for them, anything to protect them and do everything in our power to keeping them happy and healthy. However, when you have a child the world keeps on turning- and there are still things that need to be done around caring for our little ones. This can often mean than when you’re a mother, there are a thousand and one jobs that need to be sorted every week, and somehow they need to be fitted around your child’s schedule. It’s no wonder so many of us are completely frazzled! Here are some of the things you can do to help reduce stress when you’re balancing being a mother and life!

Consider part-time or flexible work

Whether you choose to work or stay home with your children is completely up to you. There’s no right or wrong answer and it’s all down to you and your personal circumstances.

However, one way that you can be there for your kids while keeping up your skills, and essentially getting the best of both worlds is working part-time. It could mean reducing the hours at your full-time job, or working for yourself and being your own boss which would give you flexibility.

These days you can start a blog, start a home business, or freelance from the comfort of your sofa which would allow you to work while your kids are at school or just having some quiet time. Aim to fit work around your life, rather than fit your life around work.

Find ways to relax

When you’re a busy parent you don’t get all that much time for relaxation. So when you do, it’s important to use it wisely and really unwind and rejuvenate your body and mind.

You could have a pamper session- a hot bath, some luxurious beauty products, and a candle flickering away. You could go to a spa, watch some Netflix, or even just take a few minutes meditating or enjoying a cup of tea.

Herbal tea is especially good, check out the health benefits of hibiscus tea and other blends if you’re interested. Sipping a drink and clearing your head can be good for reducing stress levels, so it’s a simple practice that can benefit both body and mind.

Stay social

When you become a parent your identity does change, you’re no longer just you- you’re now a mother or father. But that’s not to say you should lose the old ‘you’ completely, and maintaining your identity is beneficial for your mental health. Maintaining your friendships and staying social can help you to do this, so when you can- say yes to social gatherings.

Invite friends over for dinner, even arranging playdates is useful. Your children get to play and you can enjoy chatting with another adult.

How do you ensure you maintain your many roles- juggling the rest of your life with motherhood?
