Your social media content calendar lists the dates and times you intend to publish Instagram and Facebook posts, tweets, and other content. It’s the perfect place to plan all of your social media activities—from images and link sharing to blog posts and videos—encompassing both your day-to-day posting and content for social media campaigns.

Gone are the days of Facebook as a one-stop shop for all social-networking needs. While it may seem more complicated to post photos on Instagram, share casual moments on Snapchat, text on WhatsApp, and check your Twitter feed throughout the day, tweens and teens love the variety.

I can recall not too long after I started using WordSwag I showed it to one of my friends who is a professional graphic designer. Her reaction was priceless. She said, “It’s tools like these that will put me out of a job.” Granted, she wasn’t serious about her statement. But it does speak to the quality of images you’re able to create with the app.

Twitter is increasingly a target of heavy activity of marketers. Their actions, focused on gaining massive numbers of followers, include use of advanced scripts and manipulation techniques that distort the prime idea of social media by abusing human trustfulness.[93] Twitter also promotes social connections among students. It can be used to enhance communication building and critical thinking. Domizi (2013) utilised Twitter in a graduate seminar requiring students to post weekly tweets to extend classroom discussions. Students reportedly used Twitter to connect with content and other students. Additionally, students found it “to be useful professionally and personally”.[94] British-American entrepreneur and author Andrew Keen criticizes social media in his book The Cult of the Amateur, writing, “Out of this anarchy, it suddenly became clear that what was governing the infinite monkeys now inputting away on the Internet was the law of digital Darwinism, the survival of the loudest and most opinionated. Under these rules, the only way to intellectually prevail is by infinite filibustering.”[95] This is also relative to the issue “justice” in the social network. For example, the phenomenon “Human flesh search engine” in Asia raised the discussion of “private-law” brought by social network platform. Comparative media professor José van Dijck contends in her book “The Culture of Connectivity” (2013) that to understand the full weight of social media, their technological dimensions should be connected to the social and the cultural. She critically describes six social media platforms. One of her findings is the way Facebook had been successful in framing the term ‘sharing’ in such a way that third party use of user data is neglected in favour of intra-user connectedness.

A new app claims to be the social network for the anti-social. While most social media apps focus on helping you get closer to your friends, Cloak uses location data to make it easier for you to avoid your connections. The app pulls in location infor…

Blogging website Tumblr first launched ad products on May 29, 2012.[77] Rather than relying on simple banner ads, Tumblr requires advertisers to create a Tumblr blog so the content of those blogs can be featured on the site.[78] In one year, four native ad formats were created on web and mobile, and had more than 100 brands advertising on Tumblr with 500 cumulative sponsored posts.

For example, an e-commerce or travel business, being highly visual, can get a lot of value from a strong presence on Instagram or Pinterest. A business-to-business or marketing company might find more leverage in Twitter or Linkedin.

To clearly define what digital marketing is let’s talk about what it is not. For starters, it does not include more traditional forms of marketing such as radio, TV, billboard and print because they do not offer instant feedback and report. Sure, some people may respond to a call to action from an advertisement in one of these mediums but there is no way to know the exact number of people who saw or heard it. Such data is collected (and still then just educated guesses) long after the initial ad impression is made. Yes, convergence has made television at bit more interactive, with devices such as TiVo able to record viewer statistics like those for Web sites, but there is still a long way to go. With digital marketing, however, we’re already there.

This does not trouble Professor Floridi, because he thinks that some kind of currency is needed to fund social media — and if attention worked for TV, why not Facebook? But a vocal minority is lamenting not just the growth of social media ads, but also the way sites like Facebook and Twitter are nibbling away at the amount of quiet and reflective time in our culture, which has long been in decline.

Digital marketing and its associated channels are important – but not to the exclusion of all else. It’s not enough to just know your customers; you must know them better than anybody else so you can communicate with them where, when and how they are most receptive to your message. To do that, you need a consolidated view of customer preferences and expectations across all channels – Web, social media, mobile, direct mail, point of sale, etc. Marketers can use this information to create and anticipate consistent, coordinated customer experiences that will move customers along in the buying cycle. The deeper your insight into customer behavior and preferences, the more likely you are to engage them in lucrative interactions.

Social media is also an important source of news. According to ‘Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2013’, social media are one of the most important ways for people find news online (the others being traditional brands, search engines and news aggregators).[72] The report suggested that in the United Kingdom, trust in news which comes from social media sources is low, compared to news from other sources (e.g. online news from traditional broadcaster or online news from national newspapers). People who aged at 24–35 trust social media most, whereas trust declined with the increase of age.

Most people just consume and share other’s people content but when you start making your own content you can build your own media platform. This allows you to develop a distinctive personal brand around your areas of expertise and become a recognized thought leader in your field.

Or maybe not. Some people have more of a restricted view of social media, often equating it to mean the same as social networking (a.k.a. Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Other people don’t consider blogs to fall under the social media category.

Porn is easy to find. This online hangout is hip and creative but sometimes raunchy. Pornographic images and videos and depictions of violence, self-harm, drug use, and offensive language are easily searchable.

Using social media in marketing does more than improve site traffic and help businesses reach more customers; it provides a valuable venue for better understanding and learning from your target audiences.

Thanks for the great list and info Kelly! My 14 year old desperately wants to be using some of these apps. We have resisted so far, but realize that she really is an anomaly at this point so are now considering letting her at least use Instagram (as long as we come up with agreements about privacy settings etc). I’ve read that teens shouldn’t use their real name/photo on their profile as it’s searchable (despite the privacy settings). I see almost all her peers using their real name and photo, and they say it’s so they are searchable to friends. Makes sense, but seems unsafe – any tips on this?

As mentioned earlier, a lot of people user the terms social media and social networking interchangeably as if they mean the exact same thing. Although the difference is subtle, they’re not the same. Social networking is really a subcategory of social media.

Path aimed to capitalize on Facebook backlash by offering a return to the original premise of a social network: Just you and your friends, and that’s it — no games, no ads, no losers you met in a bar “poking” you. Path was the private villa to Facebook’s out-of-control pool party. The idea had merit, but Path was even more notable for its design, brandishing animated action buttons and orderly layering long before the concepts went mainstream with iOS 7 and Google’s Material. Path’s premise was ultimately its undoing, however: By limiting the number of people you could connect with, it never achieved “the network effect” and was ingloriously sold to a South Korean Internet company five years after launch.

You can use WeChat to do just about anything, including play games, send money to people, make video calls, hail a taxi, order food, buy movie tickets, read the news, book a doctor appointment, and more.

Resources – What personnel and skills do you have to work with? Social networks like Facebook emphasize quality content. Visual social networks like Pinterest and Instagram require images and videos. Do you have the resources to create what’s needed?

Let’s face it: For better or for worse, no app has revolutionised dating like Tinder. Its simple swipe-right-to-like, swipe-left-to-dislike interface has enabled hookup culture, but has also led to marriages.

Traditional advertising is considered an outbound tactic, but digital marketing provides marketers with data to make smarter decisions. You can use retargeting technologies to deliver ads directly to people who have visited your site before. But don’t hassle them — providing them with a piece of downloadable content relevant to your business is a smart way to continue providing value to people who you hope will become customers.

Houseparty – Group Video Chat is a way for groups of teens to connect via live video. Two to eight people can be in a chat together at the same time. If someone who’s not a direct friend joins a chat, teens get an alert in case they want to leave the chat. You can also “lock” a chat so no one else can join.
