How should you explore Pompeii?

At one point in time, Pompeii was a bustling port town that boasted ramshackle, narrow streets lined with bakeries, baths, and opulent villas. But in 79 AD, the world changed for this inherently Italian town when Mount Vesuvius spewed molten lava and deadly gases over the entirety of the Bay of Naples.

From that moment on, Pompeii was preserved in a thick layer of ash and the town was never the same again. Many years later, archaeologists stumbled across the site and found a deep insight into how life used to be for Italians in the early years.

Today, Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and welcomes visitors every day, encouraging them to step back in time and explore the ruins and winding streets of a traditional Italian city. Throughout the site, there are plenty of fascinating landmarks, including the famous brothel that still has etchings carved on its walls, and an impressive villa that’s tucked away down the skinny lanes. In the center of it all, a sprawling plaza boasts the remains of prominent temples and offers a barren look at what was once the bustling city center.
There are numerous different ways you can explore everything Pompeii has to offer. Once you’re inside the site, the easiest way to get around is on foot. By doing this, you can duck in and out of the buildings, get lost down meandering lanes, and stumble upon hidden stories tucked around every corner.

Pompeii is one of the most visited attractions in the whole of Italy which means it can get busy, particularly during peak season. This means that getting a tour to Pompeii from Rome can be the best way to see everything that’s on offer.
