31 October by year. Plan trick-or-treat and party dates around the weekday. Is Halloween on the 31st or the 1st?
Halloween is on 31 October. People get confused because the day after, 1 November, is All Saints' Day (also called All Hallows' Day), and Halloween is the eve of it. The name is a contraction of "All Hallows' Eve". Some people also start celebrations early, which is why you may see events on 30 October or the nearest weekend.
Do the clocks change around Halloween?
- UK and Europe: clocks go back an hour on Sunday, 25 October 2026, so Halloween evening is a little darker, sooner.
- United States: daylight saving time ends on Sunday, 1 November 2026, the day after Halloween, so trick-or-treating keeps its usual hours and the extra hour comes that night.
Where Halloween comes from: a short timeline
From Samhain to a multi-billion-dollar holiday, Halloween has changed a great deal over time.
- Samhain: a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter, observed around 31 October to 1 November in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Many Halloween customs are thought to be influenced by it, though some academics argue Halloween began independently as a Christian vigil.
- All Saints' Day: by 800, churches in Ireland and Northumbria held an all-saints feast on 1 November, and in 835 the Frankish Empire officially adopted the date.
- Souling and guising: poor people, often children, went door to door in return for "soul cakes" and prayers, a custom documented from at least the 15th century. Guising in costume was common in Scotland and Ireland by the late 19th century.
- Trick or treat: the earliest known printed use is from 1917 in a Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario newspaper. It did not become widespread in North America until the 1930s.
- Jack-o'lanterns: carved turnips were used first in Ireland, Scotland and parts of Britain. Irish immigrants to North America switched to pumpkins, which are larger and easier to carve. American pumpkin carving is recorded by 1837.
Halloween is the eve of All Hallows, which is why it is always the night before 1 November.
