Deluge of Data Threatens Many Backup Systems

When it comes to backup and recovery, IT organizations are clearly struggling with the amount of data that needs to be managed. A new survey of 200 IT professionals conducted by Sepaton, a provider of data protection systems, finds that more than half of the respondents are trying to back up over 100TB of data. Exacerbating the issue is the fact that IT organizations, in response to security concerns, are starting to encrypt more data, which makes the actual volume of data that needs to be backed up even larger than it would normally be. The end result, finds the Sepaton study, is that a lot of IT organizations are looking for backup and recovery systems capable of operating at significantly higher levels of performance. Not surprisingly, there are too many target systems that need to be managed. What may be surprising, however, is that despite all the hype about cloud computing, there is little reliance on the cloud to back up that data. Another survey aspect that may also disappoint some of the folks promoting the latest and greatest in backup storage technologies is how much reliance there still is on tape drives for backup.
