In a past job, I worked for a weight loss facility. And, like clockwork, the first working day after New Year’s Day was one of the busiest days of our year.

I think even some of the healthiest people have a resolution to make the next year a healthier one. And, for people like me who need to shed a few pounds, weight loss is one of my goals for 2012.
I started things off in November with a gym membership. I’ve been working out there about three times each week and training for a 5k. I was certain I was starting my new year’s resolution off right.
Then I read Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness.
I mentioned this book in a previous post, but I think it deserves a bit more attention. In fact, I think it is a must-read before the New Year starts.
Why?
It will change the way you approach your next goal.
I can go to the gym each day and work hard. I can watch what I’m eating. I can drink more water and take my vitamins. I can lose 50 pounds. I can do anything. But I can’t do it alone.
In “Reshaping It All,” Candace shares how she has God help her on her journey through life, including eating and exercise habits. I don’t want to spoil the book for you, so I’ll trust that you will go read it.
Here is how I’m changing my approach…
Prayer.
With my change in employment status, I’ve realized that I’ve gotten myself into a sort of funk. I am doing ok, but just have a lack of motivation to do a lot of things – including praying.
So…
When I don’t want to get out of bed, I’ll offer it up.
When I don’t want to go to the gym, I’ll offer it up.
When I want brownies and not broccoli, I’ll offer it up.
Each step I’ll take towards my goal will have God in mind. Am I doing this for His glory? Are my actions following His teaching? With the right mindset, everything can change – including willpower. As Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
I think that will be my motto for 2012.
