How Do Dental Veneers Work?

Dental veneers are super-thin casings, sheets, or shells that are used to cover up teeth imperfections. They are attached to the front of your teeth to hide broken, chipped, gapped, or discolored teeth.

These veneers are usually made from ceramic which is a strong and durable material. There are two common types of veneers- porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers.

Composite resin is made using a resin putty that the dentist treats with UV light to harden it. This is done within a single sitting and is often preferred by people who want instant results.

On the other hand, porcelain veneers are custom-made in the lab for each patient. So the treatment takes a couple of sittings.

In the first sitting, the dentist will shave off some enamel to allow the veneers to fit in. Then molds are impressions of your teeth are taken and sent off to a lab to create the veneers.

You will be fitted with temporary veneers in the meantime. Once the lab creates the customized veneers ( which usually takes 2-3 weeks), the dentist will stick them to your teeth using special bonding glue. The procedure is usually painless and involves minimal discomfort.

How Do Dental Veneers Look?

The best thing about getting dental veneers is that they are barely noticeable. No one except you and your dentist will know you have got veneers.

The veneers are custom-made in a color that matches the rest of your teeth for seamless blending. Even the size and shape are designed in a way to make all your front teeth look similar.

So once you get veneers, your teeth will look evenly shaped. There will be no more gaps, chipped edges, or discolorations visible.

Some people are worried that attaching veneers on top of their teeth will give a protruded effect. But this is not the case as the dentists shave down your natural enamel to make room for veneers.

Dental veneers can truly transform your smile and improve your self-confidence by making your teeth look aesthetic. And the results can last up to 15 years making them a long-term solution too.
