How ‘desperate Cries’ Woke the Quiet Neighborhood to the Swordsman’s Bloody Frenzy

By Elliefrost @adikt_blog

Shortly before 7am, residents of a quiet area in north-east London were woken by shouting and the sound of a van crashing into a house.

A series of piercing and harrowing screams, believed to come from a woman, were heard in Thurlow Gardens, Hainaut, as a man with a sword went on a violent and bloody rampage on Tuesday.

In the terrifying 22 minutes that followed, a 14-year-old boy was killed. He was one of five people - including two police officers - who were attacked. Police believe the victims were randomly targeted.

Here you can see minute by minute how the incident developed.

6:53 am

The police receive 999 calls

Redbridge Borough Police are receiving calls reporting that a vehicle has crashed into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area of Hainaut, north-east London.

An eyewitness told the Telegraph that a man was then "stabbed in the neck by the driver" after he approached the vehicle to check on the motorist's welfare.

The attacker then gets back into the gray van, reverses and drives away.

The suspect was photographed from a top floor bedroom window on Laing Close, wearing a yellow hooded jumper and holding a sword. He probably drove his van to this street after ramming a nearby house.

6:54 am

The attack unfolds

A resident photographs the man walking facing Laing Close, sword in his right hand.

A police officer stands several meters in front of the suspect, with the body of an injured passerby to his left. The suspect shouts at officers: "Is there anyone here who believes in God?"

It is believed the suspect went through an alleyway to Franklyn Gardens, where he is again photographed on the street.

A police car approaches the suspect, forcing him to return to Franklyn Gardens, where he is believed to have walked to another alley.

A policewoman on foot approaches him around this time and orders him to put down the gun.

Another police car approaches and the suspect flees.

The man runs into an alley of garages, hidden between Franklyn Gardens and Thurlow Gardens. A police car has followed him and three officers, including a female officer on foot, shout: "Come here. Drop the sword."

The suspect disappears behind a garage. Video shows officers closing in on his last known location, warning each other "easily, easily" in case he emerges.

He is then seen on top of the garages before falling down into the back garden of one of the houses at Thurlow Gardens.

Someone is heard shouting: 'He's going into people's gardens, man. Lock your doors. Lock your doors. Everyone lock your doors."

One officer explains that they think he is "going out of a side gate."

7.15 am

Suspect is arrested

The suspect is tasered and arrested in Thurlow Gardens before being handcuffed and dragged into the back of a police van. An eyewitness estimated that it took about eight officers to stop him.

7:35 am

Emergency services assist the police

The London Fire Brigade is called to assist police and paramedics at an "incident near Hainaut tube station".

'He has a huge knife': Terrified neighbors recall horrific scene

Petrified residents locked their doors and hid from view as the sword-wielding man apparently shouted about God before roaming door to door looking for people to target.

While the motive for the attack remains a mystery, much of the police hunt and the man's erratic behavior was captured on cellphone footage that was later posted to social media.

The first emergency calls to the police came at around 6.50am and the London Ambulance Service was alerted at 6.54am.

While the exact sequence of events remains unclear, some said the suspect first attacked a passerby before getting back into his van and crashing into a house in Thurlow Gardens.

The front bumper was mangled and ripped off. The man was then seen jumping out armed with the sword.

It appears he was heading to Hainaut metro station, where early morning commuters were heading to work. It is likely that some of the victims were passers-by who were confronted by him.

One witness said: "I heard shouting, I heard shouting - I thought, who would be shouting at this time tomorrow morning?'

"The shouting sounded like the police - you know when they order someone to stop or get on their knees or something - that's what it was like.

"It was like, 'stop where you are, put that down, put that down' - that kind of thing.

"I looked out the back window because that's where the noise was coming from. I saw a guy dressed in yellow jump some fences... then he went into an alley like he was going back out onto the street.

"I saw a police officer and a policewoman - normal officers with short sleeves - chasing him, and they were shouting for him to put it down."

Another witness said a series of tense confrontations took place between police and the attacker in an alley before a woman was heard screaming.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "I also heard the words 'he has a huge knife', or 'he has a huge sword'. Then he disappeared into this alley and then he was out of sight.

"She [the police] went into the alley and there seemed to be some sort of standoff where I heard a huge commotion, and then I heard a scream.

"At least one person was stabbed as a result of the commotion. I think it might be a woman because I heard a woman screaming and then some kind of sobbing noises.

"Then I heard a voice say something like 'she's been stabbed in the face' or 'we need help' - you know, calling for medical help."

Ela Zaniewska, 46, an insurance worker, said she heard a "desperate scream" from her home in nearby Amanda Close early on Tuesday morning.

"I let the cat out around six in the morning. I came back and the cat was very nervous. I stood up and quickly looked to see what was going on. It must have been something terrible; it is a very quiet area.

"There were blue lights everywhere. At one point I heard a woman screaming and crying. All I heard was screaming. It sounded like a desperate scream. I couldn't see much, but I could hear a lot of sounds."

A video posted to social media showed the suspect emerging from the alley after climbing onto a row of garages as officers shouted at him.

It is believed he continued to Laing Close where he was repeatedly challenged by officers before being tasered.

A Laing Close resident, who did not want to be named, said she saw a man with a sword standing just outside her home next to what appeared to be a body lying on the ground.

"He waved his sword in an attempt to attack the police, but then they sprayed him and he ran away," she said.

"He shouted at the police 'do you believe in God?', also at the ambulance.

"We were very scared and tried to hide and not be seen through the window because he was right next to our house and could have seen us if he looked up.

"We tried to hide, but at the same time we also took videos of him attacking the police, and of the body on the ground, so yes, we were very scared and didn't know what to do."

In another video, submitted by a resident, a police car arrives before the man verbally confronts police, shouting: "Is there anyone here who believes in God?" while standing next to the motionless body.

Witnesses said the man was eventually tasered on Laing Close at 7.15am. When he fell to the ground, "about eight people jumped on him," a witness said, before he was handcuffed and bundled into the back of a van.

A man who witnessed the arrest told Sky News: "There was a massive police response - there were a lot of them, at least a dozen. They all ran to the driveway, yelling and screaming at him to put down a large samurai sword. He shouted back at them.

"They tasered him. Then seven or eight piled on top of him. They were there for about 15 minutes before picking him up off the floor and putting him in the back of the car [police] van. They arrested him [about] 7:15."

Nagesh Katipally, who lives in Thurlow Gardens and saw the arrest, said: "There was initially a scream and some shouting at 6.50am. It was a high-pitched scream.

"Then the police came within a few minutes. I thought it might have something to do with the parking lot since it gets busy here during rush hour.

"When the police came, they took the knife and wrapped him in a black sheet. There was no blood on him. He was still alive and showing resistance, and four officers took him into the van.

"It looked like a big cloth he was wrapped in. They put it over his head and then around the rest of his body, then lifted him up and carried him away.

"Once he was in the sheet, they pushed him into the van. I then saw a police officer carrying the machete. Because of the incident, I had to keep my children home from school today."
