This chart reflects the results of the latest Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between August 10th and 13th of a national sample of 1,500 adults, with a margin of error of 2.6 points. The chart above shows the opinion of the 535 Democrats in the survey.
While all of these candidates would make a good president, I believe there is one overriding characteristic that will determine who the Democrats choose to be their nominee -- can the person beat Donald Trump in the 2020 general election. For all Democrats (and most Independents), the most important thing is kicking Trump out of the White House.
Currently, a majority of Democrats see three candidates as having the ability to beat Trump. 65% say Joe Biden could do it, along with 57% saying Elizabeth Warren could do it and 52% say Bernie Sanders could do it. The only other candidate approaching a majority is Kamala Harris at 47%.
Warren's climb in electability has been impressive recently. Just a few weeks ago, she wouldn't have had anywhere near a majority of Democrats believing she could beat Trump. But that has changed.
Democrats are starting to be impressed with her campaigning. She has refused to attack her fellow Democrats, instead focusing on the issues by coming up with plans to solve the nation's problems. And she has shown herself to be a tough and passionate campaigner, who would be more than a match for Trump in a debate. Trump has only lies, while Warren has facts and solutions -- and it's become evident she would call Trump out on his lies.
Biden still leads in the electability factor, but Warren is gaining ground -- and it would not surprise me if she soon catches up with him.
