Houston Electricity Cheaper Than Last Year

Rates are trending down. If your current plan is expiring now is your chance to get the best Houston electricity cheaper than what you paid last years!

Is Houston Electricity Cheaper This Year?

Texas electricity prices have been on a downward trend for the past year. The average electricity price on a 12-month term fell from 11.3 cents in the middle of February 2019 to 10.6 cents per kWh in the middle of September 2020. At 1,000 kWh per month, it makes for a $7 difference.  You’re not going to turn down $7 each month! All you need is a new electricity plan to save on utility bills

If you locked in a 12-month contract a year ago and it’s about to expire, the time to shop for a new electricity plan is now. Even though the average price is 10.6 cents, you can find even lower 12-month prices with some Houston light companies.

Ultra Low Price with a Bill Credit

The cheapest average price in Houston right now is 6.7 cents per kWh on the Gridedge 12 plan from Chariot Energy. This plan is best for households that use at least 1,000 kWh per billing cycle year round. Customers receive the plan’s $90 bill credit at 1,000 kWh, so any month below the 1,000 kWh threshold can cause a real bummer when the bill arrives. Chariot Energy maintains a 5-star rating at http://www.texaselectricityratings.com

Houston Power for Moderate Usage Customers

Like the plan above, the Gexa Saver 12 plan from Gexa Energy is best for moderate usage customers. This plan has a $95 bill credit at 1,000 kWh making its average price at that usage 7.9 cents. With a higher price and a lower rating on Texas Electricity Ratings, it’s hard to see customers picking this plan when comparing the two head-to-head.

A Bill Credit Usage Window

Rounding out the 12-month Houston electricity plans with the lowest rates is the Smart Value 12 Online plan from Cirro Energy. At 1,000 kWh, this plan’s average price is 8.8 cents. Again, the bill credit is the story here. But this time, two usage volumes dictate the bill credit. Customers must use between 1,000 and 2,000 kWh in a billing cycle to earn the bill credit. If your usage falls above or below this range, you don’t get the $30 bill credit that month.
