Not even a month after House Chaplain Patrick J. Conroy submitted his letter of resignation (after Paul Ryan asked for it), he has now rescinded that resignation.
According to the Washington Post, House Speaker Paul Ryan agreed on Thursday to keep Rev. Conroy on as House Chaplain after much speculation that Ryan asked for Rev. Conroy’s resignation because he is a Catholic.
“While you never spoke with me in person, nor did you send me any correspondence, on Friday, April 13, 2018 your Chief of Staff, Jonathon Burks, came to me and informed me that you were asking for my letter of resignation,” Rev. Conroy said in a letter to Speaker Ryan. “I inquired as to whether or not it was ‘for cause,’ and Mr. Burks mentioned dismissively something like, ‘maybe it’s time that we had a Chaplain that wasn’t a Catholic.'” On Thursday, Paul Ryan said he accepts Father Conroy’s decision to rescind his resignation. “I have accepted Father Conroy’s letter and decided that he will remain in his position as chaplain of the House,” Ryan said in a statement. “My original decision was made in what I believed to be in the best interest of this institution. To be clear, that decision was based on my duty to ensure that the House has the kind of pastoral services that it deserves.” Father Conroy has served as the House Chaplain since 2011.
