Hope FC share ‘Call Me a Lioness’ England anthem ahead of the Women’s World Cup 2023

We’re big fans of football songs here at Spectral Nights and feel it’s a crying shame the traditional Cup Final song is no more. However, the international scene – with ‘Three Lions’ and ‘World in Motion’ still on regular rotation at every major tournament (we strongly believe Adam and Joe’s ‘The Football Song’ should sit alongside these) – still brings the goods and who is more deserving of their very own anthem than England’s European Championship-winning Lionesses?

Named after former manager Hope Powell and representing ‘Hope for Change’ as the Women’s World Cup kicks off and inspires even more girls to start playing football, Hope FC’s all-star squad features Self Esteem, Ellie Rowsell (Wolf Alice), Al Greenwood (Sports Team), Marika Hackman, Rachel Chinouriri, Shura, Jasmine Jethwa, Rose Gray, Highlyy, co-writer Olivia Dean and the one and only Melanie C.

The tune starts – like all good football songs do – with a snippet of commentary from an iconic match (here it’s Chloe Kelly’s winner in last year’s final) before heading off into a bubbly and jaunty indie-pop sound with references to past players’ goals and celebrations and an earworm of a chorus that promises ‘We’re bringing it home again’. There’s also a touch of Three Lions-style hope running through: ‘But now we’re dreaming once again… Call me a Lioness, I wear it on my chest. Won’t stop ’til we’re holding up the cup because winning once was not enough’.

We’re excited for this tournament – good luck to the Lionesses!

‘Call Me A Lioness’ will raise money for the following charities that support grassroots girls and women’s football: Football Beyond Borders, Street Soccer London, Girls United and Manchester Laces.
