Homemade Nesting Pockets

How to make a nesting pocket

This week hasn’t exactly allowed me to get out into the garden and do any work.  So instead my efforts have gone towards things that can be done indoors, plus the house has had one of its rare thorough cleans!

The Big Garden Birdwatch is taking place this weekend so I thought I would give it ago. Simple really, sit in a comfy chair with a cuppa and watch the birds that visit your garden for 1 hour.  You note the species and the highest number of them that visit at any one time (don’t add them all up as you maybe counting the same bird).  I’m always trying to find more ways of attracting wildlife into the garden so a while back I had a go at making a nesting pocket.  With thick snow over all the gardens I work in I thought it was time to make another one.

I’ve gone for a different shape with this one in the hope it may attract a different species.  I’ve also increased the thickness of the stuffing material following advice from Wendy at the Wildlife Trust who I met whilst volunteering.  The finished article really does seem very cosy!  I just need to find a suitable site for it now, somewhere sheltered and awkward to reach keeping predators at bay.

Good luck to all those taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, I hope you spot many of our feathered friends.
