Home Improvement: 5 Cheap Upgrades That Won’t Hurt Your Pockets

By Kravelv

A common misconception among homeowners with dreams of giving their homes a facelift is that it is going to cost them…quite a lot. But, on the contrary, this does not have to be the case at all times. Today, with more and more homeowners choosing to DIY their home renovations, the possibilities are endless and there is no way that you would not be able to find something that suits you and your home. Here are five of the cheap upgrades that you can do yourself:

1.) Have a functional kitchen

More often than not, a home would feel lacking because the appliances and items inside are no longer functional. And among all the places in your home, the kitchen holds the most appliances.  Make sure all of them are still in working order and if your budget permits it, replace the kitchen faucet set, update the old lighting fixtures and add new cabinet doors. Painting your cabinets in a new color will also give them that fresh new look.  Make your kitchen functional and make it looks visually aesthetic as well. Remember, for most, it is still considered the heart of the home.

2.) Upgrade the bath

Apart from having a functional kitchen, your bathrooms should be in working order as well. Sinks should have faucets that work and toilets should flush. If you find that your bathrooms are lacking in this area, then this is what you would need to take care of first. To really give your bathroom that much needed upgrade, install a new toilet seat and have a pedestal sink. These are items you can easily install and they would make a significant difference on your bathrooms.

3.) Step up your storage

No matter where you live, there is always room for extra storage. Over the years, you will undoubtedly accumulate stuff and you would need to store this somewhere in your home. If you are living in a particularly old house, you would notice the lack of closet space. Similarly, houses with cramped storage areas would need this kind of upgrade as well. Stepping up your storage space would more often than not, only require your organizational skills. This would mean that all you would essentially have to do is to arrange everything that already exists in your storage space and discard the clutter. If your budget permits it, do expand by using wire and laminate closet systems which you can DIY.

4.) Add a splash of color

A new and fresh coat of paint would automatically enhance any room and would make everything look clean and bright again. Similarly, if you would want a quick and easy fix, consider having the rooms of your houses (especially those with paints starting to peel out) painted. Do not neglect to include your ceiling and make sure to paint the trim a contrasting color. Bonus tip: For a sophisticated finish, paint a wall three different shades of color for a monochromatic event. The bottom wall should have the darkest shade and work your way up to the lightest.

5.)  Reframe your entry

Just as people need to make a good first impression, your home does as well. With this in mind, make sure the entrance to your home not only looks presentable, but inviting as well. If the door is starting to rot and the knob is rather faulty, you might need to install a new one. Other than that, bedeck the area with a series of decorations that would add to the overall visual aesthetics of your home. Add some greenery by using potted plants, have a welcome mat and give the area some incandescent light. Doing this will not only give your home major kudos points, but would signal your visitors that you have a solid home with a welcoming atmosphere.
