Home, For the Holidays and Beyond

Posted on the 31 December 2012 by Billcookonline @billcookonline

One of my favorite holiday memories is going to my grandparents home for Christmas Eve.  From the moment we walked in the door, when the unforgettable aroma of fresh, home-made yeast rolls wafted into our noses, to the smiling faces and hugs from my grandparents and all the food and fun and gifts that followed, I will always treasure those moments in their home.

These days, as more families are separated by more miles and current economic realities prevent some visits to grandma’s house, make sure that those seniors near you are taken care of this holiday season.  Senior depression during the holidays is a very real phenomenon, and while it is a time of celebration for most, it can also be a period of sadness and grief.  Senior citizens can be easily overlooked during these busy times, causing severe health-altering depression.

Depression can be caused by many different factors.  Changing living arrangement and changes or declines in health can cause someone to become depressed.  Here are a few signs to watch for during this holiday season:

  • Questioning the reason for living
  • Not wanting to get out of bed or get dressed in the morning
  • A lack of interest in family or even themselves
  • An absence of appetite
  • Not being able to sleep well
  • Extended periods of sadness
  • Dropping out of social activities
  • Worrying about everything
  • Lack of concentration or sluggish speech

If a senior that you know is showing any of these symptoms then it may be time for a physician to intervene, so be sure to alert a family member or caregiver.  Make this holiday season a memorable one for your entire family, and also for our seniors.

This is a reprinting of a blog I wrote in 2010, but it’s just as important now!

Happy New Year everyone!
