Come December-January and it is time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new. The start of a new year invariably presents fresh opportunities and a chance for people to look at new trends and revive old ones.  And when speaking of trends, few things are more exciting than trends in home décor and home styling.  So, for all you décor addicts here is a sneak peak of what is going to be in the interior store look books next year and a guide to everything that promises to trend in 2019.

Stylish, multifunctional décor elements

Given the shrinking size of urban spaces and the emphasis on smart living, it is no surprise that multifunctional spaces and multifunctional furniture will be a popular trend.  “People will gravitate towards multifunctional furnishings and furniture, especially the young urban crowd who reside in pocket sized apartments. As space is at a premium, they must make every inch of floor area do double duty. Sofa-cum-beds, tables that fold away into the walls, and spaces that transform from living areas to sleeping areas…. interior designers will certainly find their ingenuity put to the test!  A lot of importance will be given to small space designs— like the single room below that beautifully accommodates living, working and sleeping areas and even figures out the perfect space for a bicycle!” says Basob Majumdar, VP-Design, HomeLane.com.

While functionality is important, the emphasis on style and aesthetics remain intact.  Vintage and wood finishes are definitely here to stay for the classic touch they provide to furniture, floors and even walls.  Bid adieu to boxy sectionals and say hello to the curved furniture. “In lieu of razor-sharp silhouettes, 2019 will see more rounded, ’70s-inspired furniture take over. From circular swivel chairs to curvy sofas, this season embrace a shapelier design aesthetic.  In the living room, opt for a curvy sofa and play with more angular lines by pairing it with a hexagon-patterned rug and angular lights while in the bedroom opt for an asymmetric bed as a statement piece” says Arshi Mukri, Design expert, Pepperfry.

Colours

Given that Pantone has designated Living Coral as the color of 2019, this hue is expected to literally set the design world on fire.  A vivacious, peachy orange with an underlay of pink, the color is a symbol of warmth, cheerfulness, hope and nourishment.  “This is a versatile color that we expect to see on living room couches, on foyer walls, or in bedroom duvet covers. It’s a shade that perfectly complements a vibrant color palette, when blended with other sunshine colours. At the same time, it is a shade that would also lend richness to a neutral palette of creams and light browns” adds Basob Majumdar.

Primary bold colours, deep shades, metallic accents and bright spaces are definitely something to look forward to in the new year.  “Instead of simply introducing small pops of colourful décor into an otherwise muted space, adding a lot of color in all aspects of a living space is going to be popular.  Also, one can combine bright colours, patterns and prints to create fun, contemporary and quirky looks catering to a variety of spaces and decorating stylessays Aiyappa Alemada, Business Head, Purva Streaks (A Puravankara Company).

Different types of metals would be mixed and layered to create dramatically different looks be it gold, brass or blackened metals. “Antique gold, gold patinas, period brass, black gold or bright gold would be frequently seen next to concrete raw finishes to create a sensual appeal. Gold is surely on a roll among all the other popular metals this 2019” says Shailja Awasthi, Principal Designer & Founder, Stories Design Studio.

Accents: natural and organic

Given the condition of our environment as it exists today, the importance of sustainability can hardly be overemphasised.  Designers are looking at sustainability through the use of natural building materials in architecture and native textiles in interior spaces.  More people are expected to embrace the growing affinity towards refurbished and upscaled furniture and furnishings.  Jute, cotton, linen and silks are in while any material that are not biodegradable such as plastics and synthetic derivatives will be severely frowned upon. “Apart from the use of natural materials like marble, blown glass and tactile lava stone, natural fabrics are going to be an important trend and would be seen in upholstery, throws, cushions and curtains across many styles from bohochic to French to Indian” adds Shailja Awasthi.

The use of native organic fabrics such as cottons and handlooms go a long way in adding the much needed warm, cozy and comfortable vibes to a space.  Moreover, womb like beds, upholstered headboards and footboards give a warm hug while sleeping or relaxing.

Green spaces and green living trends

The trend of including plants, vertical gardens and plenty of terrariums to add a touch of life and vibrancy is sure to stay.  Plants with ornamental large patterned leaves, the Chinese Money plant and bonsais of larger trees will be popular.  Apart from this, eco-friendly practices will take forefront and this includes energy efficient designs with less glass, more natural air flows and the use of solar and wind powered energy supply.

Personal style paramount

All said and done, the only thing constant about trends and fashions is change.  While they serve as a guide and inspiration, the key is to add your own individual touch as after all a home is supposed to be an extension of your personality.  So, go ahead and accentuate your space with the things that are precious to you, remind you of great times or are just meaningful to you. “A home should always tell the story of who you are and be a reflection of what you love regardless of the changing trends” adds Aiyappa Alemada.
