Holy Family Balika Vidyalaya Kurunegala (HFBV) once proved their power when they emerged champions to take Milo Cup at the All Island inter-school Super 16 Netball Championship (under 20) played at Buddhadasa playgrounds, Battaramulla yesterday.
In the final, Holy Family BV defeated Musaeus College with a clear lead (39-25).
HFBV and Musaeus gave a tough battle in the first quarter which ended with a 9-all while in the second half HFBV dominated a lead of 22-14. The Kurunegala lasses continued their form to reach their momentum to finish the third set 32-18. After the final quarter, HFBV finished with 39-25 to clinch the inaugural title of this tournament.
The coach of the champions team Amalka Gunatilleke said they had full confidence before the tournament while the trainer Ananda Wannitilleka (former National Volleyball captain and husband of coach Amalka) was working hard to maintain the fitness of the players. For nearly two months they prepared for this inaugural event which was sponsored by Nestle Lanka the makers of Milo.
The runners-up Museaus coach P.D.N Prasadisaid, “their team made a good battle at the final. We couldn’t train more time due to the global pandemic but were satisfied to reach the final and make a good display”.
The tournament was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Netball Association headed by Norodha Abeywickrama who is the Principal of Maliyadeva BMV Kurunegala.
At the semi finals, Musaeus beat Maliyadeva Balika 14-08 while Holy Family BV beat Kalutara Balika 8-2.
The third place in the tournament was won by Kalutara Balika defeating Maliyadeva in a thrilling 12-11.
The Best Shooter award was won by Bashi Udagedera of HFBV while the Best Defender award was won by Nethanga Gunarathne of Musaeus. Nathasha Dias of HFBV won the best Center Court Player award. The most prestigious Netball Queen was adjudged by HFBV skipper Hiruni Heshani.
Bandula Egodgage, the Vice President of Corporate Affairs of Nestle Lanka said after laps of two years (due to global pandemic) this new look tournament was more successful and it was a great opportunity for youngsters to show their skills. Nestle Lanka and Schools Netball Association have a long partnership to conduct these types of tournaments and it’s always a real boost to the youngsters added Bandula Egodgage.
Rohan Welikala Vice President of Nestle Lanka, National Netball Federation President Victoria Lakshmi, and Schools Association President Nirodha Abeywickrama were the special guests at the awards ceremony. The best 16 school Netball teams took part in the tournament.
