"Hollywood" is a trademark for a metal frame system with legs on which a box spring can be fixed and on which a headboard can be fixed. The Hollywood Bed Frame Company began producing corner iron frame systems for box springs in 1925. Just as the Kleenex brand is synonymous with facial tissue; many people came to associate spring frames with the Hollywood-based company, simply calling them "Hollywood" frames. You may also hear this bed support system called the "Harvard Frame". Again, this is a case where the name of the product manufacturer has become a household name. Harvard Manufacturing was a manufacturer of this type of bed in the 1950s, but I don't think this company is still in business. The brand still remains.
A wide range of frames is available; you can find those who raise your bed by offering storage space and those who can lower the bed if your mattress is too high. Since 1925, this style of metal bed frame has become a staple of many American homes. Compared to wooden bed bases, these are generally much less expensive and offer superior support for today's ultra thick and often soft mattress sets. Mattress frames of this type are usually found for less than $ 100. In addition, frames of this type are generally easy to assemble, easy to transport, and extremely versatile. In fact, you can buy styles that fit in width to work with any mattress size.
It would be difficult (or impossible) to find a wooden set at a price comparable with that type of versatility. The Hollywood Company is still active in Commerce, California, but today many companies manufacture similar items with a sturdy and durable iron. Several manufacturers with comparable products are Leggett and Platt, Mantua, Knickerbocker, and Glideaway, all with production facilities still largely in the United States. This is a product where importing is not as attractive as other items due to the shipping costs of such heavy and bulky items from abroad.
