Historic Govan Stones

By Emma @glasgowfoodie

Remains of a medieval Kingdom in Govan

Govan is traditionally known for its shipbuilding, but next to the River Clyde at Govan Old Parish Church you won't find a ship, but  34 early medieval carved stones.

These stones date from the 9th-11th centuries and their exact use are still unknown.  Here you will find hogback stones, which are huge blocks that are carved to look like the backs of hogs.

The stones date from a time when the Kingdom of Strathclyde was in operation, this Kingdom reached from Dumbarton down to past Carlisle, so an enviable swathe of land.  So these stones show off the power and wealth of the rulers of the Kingdom.
