Hiking, It’s Good for You!

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’m back today after a week of work and editing, but enough about that. This is the second day of fall and the leaves have started to change.

I’m bummed summer is over, but this weekend has been beautiful, and I plan on hiking later today. Speaking of hiking, did you know it’s a great way to relieve stress? I love getting out in the woods or hiking by the beach. It’s so good for you. In fact, I believe getting out into nature is one of the best things you can do for your health.

Speaking of health, our bodies were meant to move. That’s all there is to it. We spend way too much time sitting at a desk. The technology age has made us more productive but less healthy. Couple that with processed food and you have a recipe for disaster. It’s unfortunate. If you sit at a desk like many writers do, you should be stepping away every twenty minutes to walk or do a household chore. It will lengthen your life, and don’t we all want that? A longer life to spend with our families and loved ones.

I sure do.

I loved the documentary about Blue Zones because it gave us a blueprint for a long, healthy life. Diet, exercise, purpose, and community seem to be the biggest factors in longevity. What I found interesting and a little heartbreaking, is the fact that pasta is not on the list of foods the members of the Blue Zones eat. Sob.

I won’t be able to cut pasta out of my diet. There’s just no way, but I can limit it. One of the things I noticed about the Blue Zones people is they didn’t exercise at the gym, running like a gerbil on a treadmill. Nope. They walked for miles every day. So why not take that walk in the woods?

The trees release phytoncides that boost our immune system. So, why not do double duty and get the health benefits of a hike and the immune boosting phytoncides to boot?

Get outside in the sunlight before the winter winds blow and force us inside for the next nine months. Take a hike!
