LONDON 1914 - 1918 Oh! What a Lovely War!
Highlights From The Summer Programme – London 1914 - 1918 Oh! What a Lovely War!
2.30 pm on the first Tuesday of every month (from May 7 onwards) from St. James's Park Tube, the Broadway/Westminster Abbey exit
"In the month of August, 1914 there was something looming, inescapable, universal that involved us all...". And still involves us. Because the Great War was the Armageddon that forged our world. And the walk? Well, it's a stunning photograph coming up in a darkroom. Stuff you didn't know was there. Or didn't know. Shocking scars,* hidden memorials, a hallowed luggage van, an unhallowed embassy, a ghostly column marching four abreast and on-and-on, the coordinates of "the lamps are going out all over Europe" moment, the houses of some of the principals, where they walked, etc. To say nothing of some extraordinary London "compositions of place" that conjoin, right there, the Apocalypse and the decades-earlier, well-intentioned, applauded sowing of its seeds. London bandaged with visible twists of fate and history. Guided by Rex, Kim or Hilary. *Literally, shrapnel damage; but there are scars wherever you turn. And the myriad visuals are just the tip of the iceberg.
The London 1914 - 1918 walk only takes place on the first Tuesday afternoon of every month *From May 7 onward
