Snowden’s NFT was sold for approximately $5.4 million, or 2,224 ETH. An image of Snowden’s face is depicted in artwork created from pages of a US appeals court decision. The decision stated that the mass surveillance program exposed by Snowden was illegal under US law, so the art was created from the pages.
The NFT is called “Stay Free”
The funds will not be distributed to the most well-known whistleblower, who is currently residing in another country. Instead, the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Freedom of the Press Foundation, which is led by Snowden. Its board of directors includes actors John Cusack, Daniel Ellsberg, and Glenn Greenwald.
According to a Freedom of the Press Foundation statement, cryptography can play an important role in protecting our rights. It will aid in the development of useful and privacy-protecting encryption applications, which will help to keep the press free and serve the public. This auction will accomplish this.
Snowden provided top-secret information from the National Security Agency to Greenwald and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras in 2013. Snowden, who now resides in Moscow, obtained the information and passed it on to them. The Guardian and the Washington Post ran stories about Snowden’s work, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued its decision in 2020, seven years after Snowden handed over his documents to Greenwald and Poitras. The court ruled that the government’s collection of a large number of people’s phone records was illegal.
