Hello, I Must Be Going takes a 30-something divorcee and watches her break down in the privacy of her old bedroom at her parent’s home. One reviewer said the movie is great, not because of the script, but because of the lead actress, New Zealand born, Melanie Lynskey. But I think the best thing this movie has going is Girls’ actor, Christopher Abbott, playing the 19 year old acting student that falls for the older woman.
Ironically, there’s a line in the movie where Abbott’s character is high and starts yelling, “I hate acting!” But he’s so good at it. Meanwhile, the film explores one side of a divorce, but in only one scene with the other “side,” you learn all you need to know about the entire marriage. Man leaves the wife, and wife thanks him for ending something she never would have done herself.
In the end, its this. You lose one thing and you find something you didn’t know you needed all along.
