Celebrities are getting more and more interested in cryptocurrencies and digital tokens, years after most people first heard about NFTs. Heidi Klum is the most recent person to join a long list that includes Tom Brady, Matt Damon, and Lindsay Lohan.
In a new interview with Artnet, the well-known model, who has been painting on the side for a long time, said that she will soon release a series of 10 paintings inspired by the now-famous Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, a group of one-of-a-kind digital tokens that have sold at auction for as much as $1.22 million.
This is an update to the celebrity pattern when it comes to NFTs. Until now, wealthy and famous people have mostly promoted their connection to the blockchain industry by making their own NFTs instead of making unique artwork that is based on NFTs.
This month, art critic Dean Kissick wrote in Spike magazine, “Last year, I wrote that the problem with NFTs was their looks, and that everything else, like high prices, environmental damage, and the chance of being recruited into an evil worldwide cult, was just a distraction. The problem was tasteless, childish, nostalgic looks.”
For whatever reason, the Bored Apes seemed to inspire Klum. As part of Apefest, 10 (you guessed it) NFTs will be released, and one of her paintings just made its debut on a digital billboard in Times Square.
“Most people have artists create their NFTs for them,” Klum told Artnet. “But I wanted to create my own, because I love doing painting. My idea was to paint on 10 of the most important NFTs out there, which next to the Cryptopunks, are the Board Apes. I found someone who owns many of them and was willing to let me paint on them. I went into a studio downtown, a gigantic warehouse, had them all hung from the ceiling. And then I just gave myself 12 hours to paint all of them, which was crazy, but so much fun at the same time.”
