By Philpickin @philpickin

Hedgehog Awareness Week runs from 1st – 7th May 2011 and hedgehoggy events are being organised all around the country!
Events include courses, a tea dance, stalls, displays, talks and sales.  Hedgehog cupcakes are even being made in support of the week by Exeter based company Kiss and Bake Up!
Hedgehog Awareness Week is organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and takes place every year.  It aims to highlight the problems hedgehogs face and how you can help them, lots of tips to make sure our prickly friends stay well can be found on the Society’s
This year efforts are focussed on the problem caused to hedgehogs by rubber bands that litter the countryside.  The bands get caught in the hedgehog’s spines and can eventually become embedded in their skin causing all sorts of problems.  The Society has a postcard for people to hand to their postie or to send to their local sorting office asking them to ensure they don’t drop bands on their rounds.  For a free copy of the card or for membership details send an A5 sae to BHPS, Post for Posties, Hedgehog House, Dhustone, Ludlow, SY8 3PL.
If you are able to do something to help your local hedgehog care centre, please contact the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890 801 or email [email protected].  You might like to do a sponsored event, host a coffee morning or even just arrange to display a poster pack (available from BHPS) in your local library, school or garden centre.© Phil Pickin
