“The gentleman depicted in the illustration is jeopardizing his life.”
So reads the stern warning on this 1934 cigarette card (above) from the series entitled Safety First.
The advice here, in card No.43 in a series of 50, is sound indeed: “Look before you leave the pavement.”
“Do not,” it advises, “make a sudden dash into the roadway.”
There is not a single London Walks guide who would disagree with that!
We did have pause to reflect, however… in the entire series of Safety First cards, which were given away in packs of cigarettes, no mention is made of the hazards involved in smoking. Hmmm...
