Tulsi is known as Holy basil commonly found a plant in India. In Ayurveda, It is known to be an age-old ingredient. This herb is widely used in Ayurvedic medicines to treat several health-related disorders as well as beauty hacks. This ancient herb is considered to be a holy plant and in Hindu culture, this is worshipped by people.

While some persons may not be aware of the importance of worshipping this holy plant, but most Indian households grow this plant. There are commonly three types of Tulsi:

  • Ocimum tenuiflorum (or Ocimum sanctum L.) includes 2 phytochemically and botanically distinct cultivars that consist of Rama or Sri tulsi (having green leaves) and Krishna or Shyama tulsi (having purplish leaves)
  • Ocimum gratissimum is a third type of tulsi known as wild/forest or vana tulsi (consist of dark green leaves

Tulsi herb originally belongs to India but now grows in West Africa, Australia, and some Middle Eastern countries.

  • Family: Lamiaceae
  • Hindi name: tulsi
  • English name: Indian basil/holy basil/sacred basil
  • Sanskrit name: gouri, nagmata, bhutaghni, bhutapriya

Medicinal properties:

  • Rasa (taste)- katu (pungent), tikta(bitter)
  • Guna (qualities){-
  • Laghu(lightness), rooksha(dryness), teekshana(piercing)
  • Vipaka – katu – undergoes pungent taste conversion after digestion
  • Veerya- ushana- hot potency
  • Effect on tridoshas- vatahara, kaphahara- balances Vata and Kapha doshas, pittavardhini- increases Pitta doshas

Benefits of tulsi:

  • In type 2 diabetic patients, adding tulsi in your diet can help to alleviate the symptoms of diabetes. it posses blood sugar levels regulating properties.
  • Tulsi has anti-inflammatory properties and is packed with antioxidants which help in relieving joint pain and inflammation of any type. It is best used by people with arthritis. Just consume a cup of tulsi tea or tulsi oil for local applications.
  • Tulsi has calming properties and it provides sootiness to your stomach and digestive system. It improves one’s gut and makes it healthy and also reduces the side effects induced by stress-related stomach ulcers.

  • Chewing one or two leaves of holy basil leaves daily helps to relieve bad breath or halitosis by improving digestion.
