Happy New Year! It’s Time to Get Involved in Your Communities!

For a lot of people around the world, 2016 was a crummy year. No matter what your experience was last year, or how you feel about 2016’s U.S. election results, 2017 is a new year, and it offers many new ways for you to get involved. It’s vital that we come together to work with those in our communities to make our experiences better as a whole. What will you get involved with in 2017?

Most communities offer many opportunities for volunteer work through organizations, but just helping out a neighbor when he or she is struggling helps to “pay it forward.” How many times have you felt alone and wished that there could be someone to just ____? This is your year to show that kind of kindness to others. Help your neighbors plant their gardens, invite them into your garden for help. Donate those old baby clothes to the new mom down the street, if she would like them. Build bridges between those you live near and work toward building bridges with those whom are not so close in proximity to you.

Is there a local issue that is important to you? Don’t just talk about it on social media – get out there and do something about it. Join an organization that is working with that issue; run for local office; talk with those who have influence. Now is the time for us to stand up, together, and show the world that the United States really is indivisible, even when the future is uncertain for many.

Is there a cause you’re passionate about? Join the organization that supports that cause. Volunteer to raise money for that organization. Do what you can to bring positive change that you feel fired up about.

Most of all, let’s all remember that the world can be better, if only we all work together to ensure it will be. In 2017, I’m looking forward to bringing you information about causes and organizations to get involved with, interviews with people who are making change in their communities, and ideas on how you, as an individual, can create positive change. Will you join me in this journey?
