Yes, I admit that this New Years Eve tradition is a bit ... strange. Like most of these traditions are...
"The 90th Birthday Or Dinner For One" is a short British sketch from the 1960s and is shown every year on TV here in Germany. Countless times! There are even other translations available now, but the original is the English. Fun fact: The sketch seems to be totally unknown in the English-speaking world, especially in its country of origin, Great Britain.
Freddie Frinton played this sketch a few years in Blackpool, England and then once in Germany. The Germans were so keen that a German broadcasting corporation decided to invite the actors again and film the sketch. At first it was used a fill-in, later it was only shown on New Year's Eve and somehow it became a tradition...

Wir feiern den 90. Geburtstag von Miss Sophie!
Ehrlich gesagt bin ich ja immer ein wenig froh, dass der Sketch nur knappe 10 Minuten dauert, denn länger würde ich das wohl nicht aushalten. Geguckt werden muss er trotzdem Jahr, so wie letztes Jahr. Wie jedes Jahr.
Der NDR hat zum ursprünglich britischen Sketch übrigens eine ganze Themenseite, auf der man auch den Text zum mitsprechen findet (für die, die das noch nicht auswendig können ;))
