Los Angeles-based Hand Habits have announced details of their new album ‘placeholder’ (out via Saddle Creek on 1 March) and released a stunning video for the poignant lead single ‘can’t calm down’.
An eerie folk song in the vein of Kevin Devine fronting The War On Drugs, ‘can’t calm down’ took around three years to write and features guest vocal contributions from Land of Talk’s Elizabeth Powell. It finds Meg Duffy discussing not going back to the unhappy moments of their childhood: ‘Take me back outside, I don’t want to hear the sound of buzzing lights’ She then reaffirms this by saying how ‘I don’t want to be there’ before repeating the words ‘what if I can’t calm down?’, giving you a glimpse into the anxiety that ‘ancestral damage’ can bring.
