Bournival keeping up the pace
This post will focus on each Montreal Canadiens player's ability to make successful plays while in possession of the puck. Events used in this calculation include; passes, dekes, shots, and dump-ins. A successful offensive-touch can be described as any successful attempted pass, deke, shot-on-net, or dump-in. Consequently, any failed attempt at any of these events would constitute an unsuccessful offensive-touch. Only even-strength events were used in this calculation.
Players with more FAILED offensive-touches give the puck away more often than players with more successful o-touches. By extension, those players with more successful o-touches create more offense.
HOW TO READ THE GRAPH
- The higher a player's bubble is, the more FAILED offensive-touches they contributed per-minute of ice time.
- The further to the right a player's bubble is, the more SUCCESSFUL offensive-touches they contribute per-minute of ice-time.
- The bigger a player's bubble is, the higher that player's overall offensive-touch success-rate success-rate=(successful attempts)/(total attempts)
A player whose bubble appears in the bottom-right of the graph has contributed more successful and FEWER give-aways than a player whose bubble appears in the top-left of the graph.
DEFENSEMEN
Nathan Beaulieu, Douglas Murray, and Jarred Tinordi have contributed the most failed offensive-touches per-minute played. Francis Bouillon has produced the fewest failed offensive-touches; followed by Josh Gorges and Andrei Markov.
Subban has contributed substantially more successful o-touches per-minute than any other Montreal defenseman. In fact, Subban has produced more successful offensive-touches than any Habs player. Beaulieu, Markov, Gorges are ranked second through fourth in terms of o-touches PMP.
The fewest successful o-touches per-minute have been contributed by Murray and Tinordi. As mentioned earlier, both players have also produced the most failed o-touches.
Expressed simply, Murray and Tinordi have turned the puck over more often than any other Montreal defensemen, while Bouillon has produced the fewest give-aways. Subban maintains puck-possession most often, while Murray has produced the fewest successful puck-possession events.
FORWARDS
Michael Bournival continues to contribute the most successful offensive-touches per-minute played. He's followed by the injured Brandon Prust. The fewest successful offensive-touches have been produced by Michael Blunden; followed by Rene Bourque and Daniel Briere.
Gorges Parros (SSS) has the most failed o-touches per-minute; followed by Max Pacioretty, and Brendan Gallagher. It's important to note that players who control the puck more often in the offensive-zone will normally produce more failed offensive-touches than those players who control the puck more often in the neutral or defensive-zones. This could explain the numbers produced by Gallagher and Pacioretty.
Patrick Holland has produced the the fewest FAILED offensive-touches per-minute played. He's followed by Ryan White, and Michael Blunden.
