Bournival leading the way
This post will focus on each Montreal Canadiens player's ability to make successful plays while in possession of the puck IN THE OFFENSIVE-ZONE. Events used in this calculation include; passes, dekes, and shots. A successful offensive-touch can be described as any successful attempted pass, deke, or shot-on-net. Consequently, any failed attempt at any of these events would constitute an unsuccessful offensive-touch. Only even-strength events were used in this calculation.
Players with more FAILED offensive-touches give the puck away more often than players with more successful o-touches. By extension, those players with more successful o-touches create more offense.
HOW TO READ THE GRAPH
- The higher a player's bubble is, the more FAILED offensive-touches they have contributed per-minute of ice time.
- The further to the right a player's bubble is, the more SUCCESSFUL offensive-touches they have contributed per-minute of ice-time.
- The bigger a player's bubble is, the higher that player's overall offensive-touch success-rate is in the offensive-zone.
A player whose bubble appears in the bottom-right of the graph has contributed more successful puck-possession plays, and FEWER turnovers than a player whose bubble appears in the top-left of the graph.
DEFENSEMEN
As expected, PK Subban and Andrei Markov have contribute the most successful offensive-touches in the offensive-zone per-minute of even-strength ice-time. Jarred Tinordi, Francis Bouillon, and Douglas Murray have contributed the fewest successful o-touches PMP.
Subban has also contribute the most FAILED offensive-touches in the offensive-zone per-minute played; followed by Murray and Tinordi. That said, as we can see by the size of PK's bubble, his o-touch success-rate is substantially higher than both Murray's and Tinordi's.
Nathan Beaulieu has contributed the fewest FAILED offensive-touches per-minute played; followed by Bouillon and Josh Gorges.
FORWARDS
Max Pacioretty, and Michael Bournival have contributed the most successful offensive-touches in the offensive-zone per-minute of even-strength ice-time. Louis Leblanc (SSS) is also among the team leaders.
George Parros has produced the most FAILED offensive-touches per-minute played, and has a small success-rate to show for it. Other forwards with substantial failed o-touches include; Alex Galchenyuk, Brendan Gallagher, and Pacioretty. That said, the previous three players remain among the Habs most active puck-possession players in the offensive-zone; thereby explaining the high amount of failed o-touches.
Parros has also produced the fewest successful o-touches per-minute played; followed by the recently demoted Michael Blunden. Among players with substantial ice-time, Tomas Plekanec has actually produced the fewest successful offensive-touches in the offensive-zone PMP.
Patrick Holland (SSS) has the fewest FAILED offensive-touches; followed by Ryan White, Blunden and Bournival. Bournival's small failed o-touch total is made even more impressive by the fact that he has produced the second-most successful o-touches.
