HABS: Breaking Down the Defensive-pairs

By Kicks @Chrisboucher73
Data-generated scouting allows us to combine the data collected for each player in order to communicate the potential strengths and weaknesses of projected defensive-duos. This post will focus on the current defensive-pairs.
SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL OFFENSIVE-TOUCHES PER-MINUTE PLAYED
This graph represents each tandem's ability to produce both successful and unsuccessful offensive-touches (plays with possession) per-minute of even-strength ice-time. Events in all 3 zones are included in this calculation. The higher the bubble is within the graph, the more failed offensive-touches that pair produced per-minute, while the further right the bubble is, the more successful offensive-touches those players have completed per-minute.
These are not the numbers that these pairs have produced while playing together, they are simply each player's total added together.
Offensive-touches include passes, dekes, shots, dump-ins, and dump-outs.
It's no surprise that the Subban/Markov tandem have combined for the most successful offensive-touches per-minute played. Gorges and Emelin have produced the second-most successful, and failed offensive-touches, while the Bouillon/Diaz pair have both the fewest successful, and the fewest failed offensive-touches per-minute played.

 SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL DEFENSIVE-TOUCHES
This graph represents each pair's ability to produce both successful and unsuccessful defensive-touches (attempts to remove possession) per-minute of even-strength ice-time. Events in all 3 zones are included in this calculation. The higher the bubble is within the graph, the more failed defensive-touches that duo has produced per-minute, while the further right the bubble is, the more successful defensive-touches those players have completed per-minute.
Defensive-touches include stick-checks, body-checks, blocked passes, and blocked shots.
Markov, and Subban have combined for the most successful defensive-touches per-minute played among the defense-tandems. That siad, it's important to note that 62% of Markov and Subban's successful defensive-touches have been produced by Markov.
Emelin and Gorges have the second-most successful d-touches, while also having the most failed defensive-touches per-minute. Emelin (SSS) has 58% of the failed defensive-touches for this pair, and Gorges has produced 55% of the successful d-touches.
Bouillon and Diaz have produced both the fewest successful d-touches, and the fewest failed d-touches per-minute played. That said, the duo's defensive success-rate equals that of Markov and Subban.

SUCCESSFUL OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE-TOUCHES (OFFENSIVE-ZONE)
This graph indicates how the player's making up the three pairs have played in the offensive-zone. The higher the line's bubble is, the more successful defensive-touches (forechecking-events) the players have combined for in the offensive-zone. The further to the right the line's bubble is, the more successful offensive-touches (plays with possession) the players have combined for in the offensive-zone.
  • The Markov/Subban tandem are less likely to hold the line, or pinch-in at the offensive blueline. That said, they are far more active (with puck-possession) in the offensive-zone than the other duos.
  • The Emelin/Gorges pair are surprisingly more likely to hold the offensive-bluelin than the other pairs, while also being the second most active offensively in the opposition's zone.
  • The Bouillon/Diaz duo is far more passive at the offensive blueline; both offensively, and defensively.

SUCCESSFUL OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE-TOUCHES (DEFENSIVE-ZONE)
This graph indicates how the player's making up the three tandems have played in the defensive-zone. The higher the line's bubble is, the more successful defensive-touches (attempts to remove-possession) the players have combined for in the defensive-zone. The further to the right the line's bubble is, the more successful offensive-touches (plays with possession) the players have combined for in the defensive-zone.
  • The Galcheyuk, Eller, and Prust line are unlikely to give up many scoring chances by way of defensive-zone giveaways.
  • The Markov/Subban pairing is far active moving the puck out of the defensive-zone than the other pairs. They have also produced the second-most successful defensive-touches in the defensive-zone.
  • The Bouillon/Diaz Tandem have produced more successful defensive-touches in the defensive-zone than the other pairings. They have also produced the fewest successful offensive-touches. The former has produced the latter, as the duo has difficulty moving the puck out of the d-zone, and is forced to spend far more time defending in the defensive-zone. In fact, among the Habs current top-6, Bouillon has the lowest puck-possession success-rate in the defensive-zone.
  • Gorges high defensive, and offensive success-rates should carry this pair. The goal with the return of Emelin is to move this second-pairings numbers closer to those of the Markov/Subban duo.

Data-generated scouting provides us with the opportunity to use the data collected for each player in order to communicate the potential strengths and weaknesses of each defensive-tandem.
