HABS: Breaking Down Successful Offensive-zone Passes

By Kicks @Chrisboucher73
Following the recent Olympic break, I have added new puck-possession events to those already tracked. Among those, I am now separating offensive-zone passes into passes that occur off of the rush, cycle passes, passes to the slot, and east/west passes.
The numbers included here include only those games that have occurred following the Olympic break.
CYCLE PASSES IN THE OFFENSIVE-ZONE
A cycle pass is described as any pass that occurs outside of the defensive box while the team has already established possession in the offensive-zone. These passes do not include passes that are made toward a teammate in the slot, or an east/west pass across the defensive box, or along the offensive-blueline. The graph include here represents only those passes made at even-strength.
Gallagher and Pacioretty have produced far-more successful cycle passes per-minute played than any other Montreal forward. Among centres, both Plekanec and Desharnais have produced the same amount of successful cycle passes per-minute played, while Subban and Emelin lead Montreal defensemen in this category.

EAST/WEST PASSES IN THE OFFENSIVE-ZONE
An east/west pass can be described as any pass made across the opposition's defensive-box, or made along the offensive-blueline. The graph included here includes only those passes made at even-strength.
Markov and Desharnais have produced more successful east/west passes in the offensive-zone than any other Habs players. Pacioretty leads all wingers in this category.

PASSES TO THE SLOT

A successful pass to the slot represents any successful pass to a teammate in a scoring-position (slot). The below graph only includes those events that have taken place at even-strength.
This graph does an exceptional job of quantifying what David Desharnais does better than any other Montreal player, as he leads all Habs in successful passes to the slot per-minute played.

SCORING CHANCES
Not surprisingly, those Montreal players with the most successful cycle passes per-minute played are also among the leaders in scoring-chances per-minute played.  Outside of Desharnais, Gallagher, and Pacioretty, only Brian Gionta has as many as half the scoring-chances per-minute than Habs top-3 scoring-chance contributors.
This shows the importance of establishing puck-possession in the offensive-zone, while also demonstrating the Habs recent inability to create offense off of the rush.
