A 27-year-old woman was grabbed from behind while walking west of downtown Athens early Saturday morning and assaulted at gunpoint, according to Athens-Clarke police.All's well that ends well, right? The cops arrested the guy with the gun and purse. He'll probably go away for a good while judging by the charges. But where do you suppose the gun came from, the gun which could have easily turned this into a murder?
A man grabbed her, forced her to the ground and pointed a pistol at her, while trying to remove her clothes, police said. As she struggled with her attacker, other people approached, and the suspect grabbed the victim's purse and fled.
The pistol he had was stolen in a car break-in the day before, police said.So, because somebody thought it so important to keep a gun in his car, this would-be rapist and potential murderer was armed. And this is happening in every city all over the country. Gun advocates convince each other of the necessity of keeping guns and they continually flow into the hands of criminals.
An automobile is not a secure enough place to keep a gun. Neither is the night stand of your bedroom. Responsible gun onwers don't make theft that easy.
