Guide to Bachalpsee Hike

By Wanderingjoshua

Switzerland has plenty of hikes nature lovers will enjoy. The scenic views and stunning landscapes all make up for the effort and expense.

Guide to Bachalpsee Hike

I was in Grindelwald and had set time to go up to First then do one of the trails in that area. I decided to do the Bachalpsee trail.

How to Get to Bachalpsee

Guide to Bachalpsee Hike

This lake is easy to get to. Take the cable car to First, from the station, you can follow the signs that will lead you to the start of the trail. It's mostly flat and takes around two hours to complete the First-Bachalpsee-First loop. You can finish faster depending on your pace. You can also do the longer hikes after you finish the Bachalpsee trail.

Hiking in Bachalpsee

It was snowing and foggy when I got to First. I was expecting at least cloud weather but it was actually worse. It was freezing and I couldn't see the supposed spectacular views of the mountains. I decided to immediately make my way to Bachalpsee's trail.

The trail was foggy but the views of the snow-capped mountains was still a beautiful thing to see.

The trail meandered through and around the mountains. I wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere because of the poor weather. It was cold and muddy in some parts.

After around an hour, I made it to the lake. It was still foggy but its views still had a bit of entrancing magic to them. After taking a few photos, I made my way back to First.

A Cloud Day at First

I waited for an hour or so hoping the sky would clear a bit so that I could see the views surrounding First. I caught glimpses of it when the clouds parted for a while.

Once I realized the sky wouldn't completely clear anymore, I decided to take a few more photos then left for Grindelwald.

Tips for Hiking in Bachalpsee

  1. The weather and temperature in the mountain is unpredictable. For such occasions, you need to be ready for drops in temperature. Bring a pair of gloves, a jacket, a bonnet, and other things you might need.
  2. Bring snacks and water with you. There's a restaurant near the start of Bachalpsee's trail; however, it's pricey.
  3. Bring a powerbank with you to keep your gadgets charged.
  4. Wear shoes you don't mind wearing out or just wear hiking shoes.
