A longtime fan of Sue and her uh-mah-zing shop, I am extra excited today to have the style-that-is-Zhush grace this page with its presence! Let me just say ’tis fabulously sophisticated, with that dash of glam and ‘tude that I do so love. And you will too, I guarantee!
Hi there! Sue from The Zhush blog (and store: zhush.com!) here today to talk about a personal rule of thumb in decor. I say personal, because the first rule of thumb in design is of course, “there are no rules!”… which is great, unless you’re like me and you need a bit of structure. Through years of countless shelter magazines, professional advice, blogs and even coffee table books, I’ve picked up a few fail safe rules that I like to stick by.
My favorite is based on odd numbers, as in groupings of odd numbered things. Since I tend to go very symmetrical with my furniture, (think matching end tables, matching bedside tables with matching lamps, etc) it’s important to break things up and use odd numbered displays wherever I can in order to keep things looking fresh, interesting and not too contrived. Groups of three in a vignette, sets of nine in a gallery wall…when figuring out things in my home, it’s helpful for me to “play the odds.” Poking around the portfolio of Stephen Shubel the other day, I came across a few examples of odd numbers in decor and further solidified my own rule of thumb.
