[Guest Post] SummerHouse: Christmas in the South

By Erika Brechtel @smallshopstudio

Please welcome SummerHouse today!

This is such a fun post: SummerHouse — a furniture, accessories and interior design boutique — shares with us how they do Christmas in the South! I hope it inspires you with your own holiday decor (I know it has with mine)!

“Not surprisingly, the first three states
to make Christmas a legal holiday were in the South:
Alabama in 1836, Louisiana and Arkansas in 1838.”
~ The History of Christmas online

We at SummerHouse in Mississippi are honored to get to
write this guest post for Erika! She inspires us daily with her
beautiful photos and findings, so we hope we can inspire you just a
little bit as well! SummerHouse is a furniture boutique in Ridgeland,
MS where “traditional and modern pieces fuse to create a look
that’s sophisticated, comfortable and beautifully fit for the
individual it defines
.” Because of our talented design staff,
we’ve made a name for ourselves all over the Southeast, even though
most of you have probably never heard of the town in which we are
located!

Beautiful design never sleeps,
particularly during the holidays…

You see, Christmas is a central part of
the holiday season here in the South. A family outing to pick the
perfect tree is as established a tradition as celebrating a birthday.
Making wassail or hot toddys is as much a custom as tailgating before
the season opening home football game. Here in the South, we start
planning parties and buying decorations while still in our shorts and
sandals. Christmas down South is a big deal, to say the
least!

When our clients ask us to decorate
their homes for the holidays, knowing the significance and investment
of great Christmas décor, we are honored to take on the challenge.
Parties, events, and fundraisers are scheduled ONLY when these homes
are decorated, so we know the responsibility we have to make our
clients’ Christmas decorations as fabulous as possible.

Just as personalities vary from person
to person, so do our clients and their own personal style of holiday
décor. It is always important to us southerners to incorporate our
most treasured, passed down ornaments and traditions into our home
along with current, newly found pieces. Modern, traditional, natural
… We get requests for it all! We hope you enjoy the photos of the
three [very different!] houses we worked on this year.
