Guatemala: Significant Increase in the Activity of the Pacaya Volcano

(Guatemala) The authorities continue to monitor the Pacaya volcano, located at 15 km south of the capital of Guatemala and which is experiencing a significant increase in its activity, we learned Sunday from the civil protection.

In recent hours, the volcano, which peaks at 2020 meters above sea level, recorded explosions every minute and lava flows are constantly expelled from its bowels, explained the National Coordination for Disaster Prevention (CONRED), in a press release.

According to CONRED, the column of incandescent material rises to 150 m above the crater.

Monitoring of eruptive activity continues, in coordination with the local communities located on the slopes of the volcano.

The images filmed by AFP show serial explosions, even if no preventive evacuation of populations has yet been carried out. .

The previous eruption of the Pacaya, the 26 and 27 may 2010, caused the death of a television journalist, hit by poison gas during a report.

The eruption of another volcano, the Fuego, at 51 km away southwest of the capital, talked in June 2018 one of the worst catastrophes in Guatemala: a fiery cloud descending from the flanks of the volcano had destroyed 150 villagers and 202 others had been reported missing.
