Story: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 starts as the guardians’ Peter (Pratt), Drax (Bautista), Groot, Rocket, Nebula (Gillan) and Mantis (Klementieff) have relocated to Knowhere. Peter is still reeling from the loss of the Gamora (Saldana) he knew as the new one has moved on to become a Ravager. They come under attack from Adam Warlock (Poulter) who is searching for Rocket, leaving him injured.

The Guardians decide to come together to do everything they can to save Rocket. This sees them traveling across the galaxy once again. Meanwhile, we get to learn more about Rocket’s past as the High Evolutionary (Iwuji) created him. This powerful person wants to create a perfect society and needs Rocket to complete his twisted dream.

Verdict on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

The Guardians

Peter spends his days getting drunk in the new home of Knowhere. He misses Gamora even though his friends are keeping him safe. Once Rocket gets hurt, he is determined to find a solution leading the guardians on their latest mission. He does find himself using his human touch to help with interactions. However, his bickering with the new Gamora does feel repetitive after a while.

Gamora is now a Ravager and she enjoys this life. She doesn’t know how any version of her could have fallen for Peter. As the movie unfolds, you can see a complete swap between Gamora and Nebula, with Nebula the voice of reason trying to help her sister out. Meanwhile, Nebula is still short on patience, which can hold her back at times. However, she proves to be the strongest member of the crew when it comes to dealing with problems.

Rocket is the star of the show, despite getting injured early on. It is his back story that we learn most about, seeing how he went from a small racoon tortured for science to the wisecracker we know. We see a much more vulnerable and innocent figure who gets to learn the hard way about the universe. His side of the story brings all the emotions to the movie.

Mantis, Drax and Groot complete the core Guardians. They bring most of the same with us learning more about Groot’s ability. Mantis and Drax tend to bring comedy to the table, even though they offer key parts to everything that unfolds.

The Newcomers

The High Evolutionary is the main villain here. He created Rocket in his endless determination to create the perfect society. However, after constantly failing, he wants Rocket back so he can understand what made Rocket different to the rest of his subjects. This character should come with a trigger warning, as his experiments on animals make him the easiest villain to hate.

Adam Warlock is part of the sovereign, the perfect son sent to complete the difficult missions. He creates the chaos that sees Rocket injured and knows he must retrieve Rocket to save his society. Adam can come off like a bit of an idiot, but his motives to save his own kind are what move him forward through the story.

The other notable newcomers include Cosmo the dog with telekinesis. She brings plenty of laughs with a new skill when needed. Elsewhere, it is Rocket’s cellmates, Lylla, Teefs and Floor that steal our hearts as the four find happiness in the darkest place.

Performances

When it comes to the performances, the returning cast is all great again. Zoe Saldana gets to have more fun as the darker vision of Gamora, while Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff get all the laughs. Will Poulter gets a lot more laughs than I was expecting and makes us want to see his character more. While Chukwudi Iwuji brings all the twisted nature to his character to make us hate him throughout the film.

Story

The story sees the Guardians needing to go on their own rescue mission to save Rocket. It sees them traveling across the galaxy and we learn more about Rocket’s past.

The story does feel a lot simpler than many other movies in the MCU. It is a simple get to each location for more information to save one of their own type of stories. We do of course have a few distractions along the way, leading to them needing to get out of trouble. While the story is simple, it is the character development that moves the story in the best way.

We get to learn about Rocket’s back story, as well as other characters needing to face their own pasts. The new characters add plenty to the story, as we see they are fighting for the same thing in their lives. It all ties up nicely to complete a trilogy that could easily stand alone in the MCU.

Themes

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is an action sci-fi adventure movie, that brings everything to the table. We get to visit new locations in space, created to be unlike anything we have seen before. It is what makes the Guardians such an enjoyable ride, the new worlds we can visit.

As for the action, it is big, we have different characters with different skills in combat. This creates more unique opportunities to show off skills, most notably with Nebula and Groot having more upgrades. The visual effects are great too, with worlds feeling lived in and the character feeling like we are with them on their journeys.

Final Thoughts – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is an emotional rollercoaster to complete a wonderful trilogy.
