Developed for the U.S. Navy after the collapse of the F-111B project, the Tomcat would be the first of the Teen Series fighters, designed incorporating Vietnam air combat experience. First flown in 1970, these movie-star aircraft served in the US Navy until retirement in 2006. Retired in 1999 after a twenty-year career that included Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield, this Tomcat wears the colors of VF-201, the “Fortune Hunters”, a US Naval Reserve unit. This Tomcat was originally placed on display at NAS Atlanta before coming here to the Aviation History Technology Center. With over 700 produced, an estimated 26 are still in service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force.
