The Grumman A-6 Intruder was an all-weather attack aircraft built by Grumman Aerospace from 1962–1990. This example on the USS Intrepid flight deck is a rare Foxtrot variant of the A-6, an advanced version with updated electronics, glass cockpit, General Electric F404 turbofans, and composite wings with additional weapons stations. Five A-6Es were upgraded before the program was cancelled in 1988 to focus on the A-12 Avenger II. The A-6 was the US Navy/US Marine Corp’s primary asset for medium bomber duties until replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet in the 1990s.
