I’ve been blogging for 2+ months now and decided it was time for some ground rules. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why I blog, what I enjoy reading on other blogs, and what inspires me. I’ve loosely shaped these conclusions into my “Blog Ground Rules” thus far:
1) I (will) really try to post all original content. This means I try to to do and write about all of our own projects that we’re actually doing (or thinking about doing), and explain the inspiration for those projects. I’m also inspired by other DIY tutorials on the web that we can personalize for our own home. I don’t enjoy design blogs that simply re-post photographs that have JUST appeared in another major design source just for the sake of telling you that it’s a “great room,” and I doubt you do either. This tenet (happily) forces me to put my ideas to work, rather than keeping them stuffed away in a binder somewhere. The more projects I do, the more inspired I am and the more I want to blog. And the more blogging I do, the more projects I want to implement. It’s a mutually beneficially relationship.
2) I really believe in antique/vintage/estate/second-hand/inherited decor items. Most are more affordable than what you can buy today at big box stores, have more character, and are far more accessible to most people. For those vintage items that aren’t, you can still use their inspiration to create a look that is unique and has its own sense of character. I’m not saying that everything “good” has already been made, but if you look at our home decor over time we’re really only re-imagining what’s already been done, albeit in a brilliantly familiar way.
3) I’m continuing to tackle the huge technical learning curve that is blogging. I don’t know that I’m doing it well, but I certainly try. Each month I’ve slowly made improvements (hopefully) in things like photograph quality, site search-ability, linking the blog with Twitter (I don’t do Facebook), etc. I’m also working on ways to make the blog more user friendly and will be developing a poll that allows you to provide feedback on the blog and let me know more about the type of content you’d like to see. I continue to try and make the blog more and more appealing, both in its content and the delivery of that content.
Lastly, thank you to all of you who read the blog on a routine basis, and especially those who provide comments (!!). I still feel a bit weird essentially talking to myself (and my imaginary friends?) in an effort to have a cyberspace presence. I appreciate all of your shout outs and your willingness to tell your friends and family to check out the blog. You guys rock!
XO, Heather
