The dating and link app Grindr says it will remove the "ethnicity filter" from the next version of its app, after years of criticism from its users.
The app currently allows people to filter potential matches based on age, height, weight and ethnicity.
But critics say the ethnicity filter fuels discrimination and that the app does too little to deal with racism.
In announcing the change, Grindr claimed to have a "zero tolerance policy for racism and hate speech" on its platform.
On May 29, the company tweeted "Claim Justice. #BlackLivesMatter", with a link for more information. This prompted several users to accuse the company of hypocrisy.
A message saying "remove the ethnic filter" has been retweeted 1,000 times.
Grindr subsequently canceled his tweet and posted a new message on June 1 explaining his change of position.
Several companies published their own messages with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter after six consecutive days of protests in the United States. The events were prompted by the killing of George Floyd - a black man who died after a white officer continued to kneel on his neck even after pleading that he could not breathe.
While some Grindr users welcomed the removal of the filter, others said the company had taken too long to implement the change and had done the "bare minimum".
