Last week’s GTO had Taichi overcome his ADHD issue with his family, classmates, and teachers by running in a marathon.

Summary of Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 3

  • Satsuki (Yuria Kizaki) and Hironao (Arata Horii)’s “relationship” is on a downward spiral after she meets an older man that she likes and is tired of being with Hironao and dealing with his oddities. With that relationship deteriorating, Hironao resorts to following her, which leads to him finding out that the guy and the group she’s meeting with is part of a prostitution service for girls 15 or under. After Onizuka takes care of them, Satsuki gets captured by another group that apparently likes capturing little girls and proceeds to humiliate her in ways that don’t revolve around her stripping. After she’s then threatened to be killed, Hironao steps in and tries to stop them, but gets beat up. That’s when Onizuka shows up and takes care of the group, and the problem is…mostly solved.

Well, that position sure seems appropriate

  • I’m prettttyyyyy much torn on this entire episode. Following up last week’s emotional episode, I think this one, after much thinking on it, was mediocre.
  • I think the first problem to address is once again, after selling that they would address the situation between Vice President Ayuna and President Ryuichi at the end of episode 2, they barely touched upon it in this episode. The problem with doing something like this is the more this issue continues to stall, the greater the expectations will be that how it will be revealed and solved is meaningful and worthwhile. Considering it seems to have everything to do with having a child at the age Ayuna is, maybe it can be? But I have my doubts since that’s a touchy topic, though it is something worth exploring for a show where Onizuka is supposed to be able to solve his students’ problems.
  • The second problem with this episode is I think there’s too many eggs in the basket. It wants to address stalking, which was one of the main points in the episode, but it also introduces troublesome relationships, interacting with strangers, two different groups that want to do things with young girls, and a subplot between Miyaji (I’ll get to later) and Kouhei (Ryo Ryusei). I’m not even touching the issue with Satsuki’s parents being away from her, nor the fact that Satsuki has a blog (which was vaguely addressed for the most part). Sure, maybe all of that can be included in an episode, but in this case, the focus is lost and being overbearing with Satsuki getting caught twice is not smart at all. There is a correlation between online privacy and stalking; I just don’t think it was done well in this episode.

There needed to be more barhopping in this episode. Probably.

  • And probably a further reason why I thought it wasn’t done well is the third, and probably biggest, problem I found with the episode is the characters were unlikable. I couldn’t get behind anybody. Hironao had intentions and his moments of being misunderstood by Satsuki (the part where one of the sticks fell and he picked it up to put it back being an example) were understandable. But goddamn man, why are you legitimately living outside of Satsuki’s house and eating food on top of that? Texting her about how she’s shit when she’s about to go off to someone else WHILE you’re trying to warn her that that someone else is dangerous? Why are you grabbing her and yelling at her? And, seriously, I know it’s probably in the moment and all, but when you’re in a shady building I think calling the police is an option, and he doesn’t do it! So he’s a stalker and he’s dumb.
  • Satsuki…yeah Satsuki is almost hard to describe how unlikable she was in this episode. Maybe it’s just a portrayal of youth at her age, I don’t know. But her acknowledgement of men is questionable, to say the least, her personality is terrible, and her naivety is startling. Ok, when you’re young being naive happens, but she was frustrating.
  • And then the rest of the crew involved with Satsuki: the guy called “Julie” and his crew, and the guy in the suit and his crew…gutless. That is all.
  • So…by default that probably makes Sachiko the best character in this episode. Well then…

Some loser would be eating while everyone else is kicking ass, makes perfect sense!

  • So again, this episode was tackling stalking. It is a meaningful thing to do since this still happens today. I’m still confused as to why they sent Tsugumi in a long tunnel where I see no exits (they must exist though) and allowed a JP man with American cherries to stalk her, but they were trying to set the tone. So, ok. Stalking is bad. It’s not fun. And especially for anyone who’s modestly popular, like Satsuki, who apparently was targeted because she had her blog. I wish I knew what exactly that blog did. Whatever the case, if nothing else, the episode was a good reminder that yeah, you should be mindful of where you put your info, even though in an ever increasing world where some jobs ask for all your information and with the internet, it’s not always easy to hide all your info.

  • So, one distracting thing about GTO 2014 so far is them continuing to highlight Miyaji, without going into her background. Obviously she’s going to have her moment eventually so it’s more or less a test of patience, but it’s mostly frustrating since as far as we know, she rarely goes to homeroom, she’s always in the nurse’s office, she knows Ayuna, and apparently she has some issue with Serizawa? Why else did she give that look once he walked in? Her role in this, starting from Episode 1 to now is weird. We can only hope it will actually be a worthwhile issue.

  • So yes, I have nothing more to say. I wasn’t very impressed with this episode. Even though I did watch it twice. And it did include some fights. And a Onizuka flying headbutt. Also the end of the episode was crazy. They should totally do an anime episode just like that.
