A grandson who was convicted of raping and killing his grandmother was sentenced to death by the Kegelle High Court judge Jayaki de Alwis yesterday.
The convict, Chaminda Gunaratne is a 50-year-old person residing in Palapoluwa, Kagelle.
He had come to his grandmother’s house drunk on the night of August 24 and raped her while she was sleep. When the grandmother recognised her grandson as her attacker, he strangled and killed her and left the house after sleeping for a while. Later, after the neighbours informed the Police about the incident, the grandson was arrested while he was receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital on May 1, 2011.
The post-mortem examination was conducted on the victim and it was confirmed that she has been raped and strangled to death.
